New Study Opportunity

Looking for junior helpers to assist in studies on children’s reading and spelling skills. Are you interested in learning about how music perception skills are linked to reading and spelling abilities? Children complete several tasks designed to measure these skills, such as judging which of two puppets drummed best to a song. Children between the ages and 6 and 10 years old are eligible to participate. This study can be completed in a single one-hour visit to our lab. If you are interested in signing up please give us a call at 780-497-5806 or e-mail us at ChildLab@macewan.ca

We look forward to hearing from you!

What to expect during a typical visit

Some of our studies are conducted in the Child Development Lab at MacEwan University, and other studies are conducted in the community. For some studies, you can choose whether you would prefer to have your child participate at MacEwan University or at their music school or after school care centre.

During a typical visit, your child will complete fun tasks designed as games in order to assess different skills and traits, such as listening abilities, vocabulary, or social skills. Many of these games are similar to the kinds of things children might do in school, or in extracurricular activities such as music or dance lessons. Parents are sometimes asked to complete questionnaires about their child’s extracurricular activities or personality. All studies are minimal risk and you are invited to be with your child at all times. Most studies can be completed in less than an hour, and children receive a small gift such as a book or toy as a token of our appreciation for participating.

For studies that are conducted in the Child Development Lab at MacEwan University, we provide free parking to participating families as well as a playroom to entertain any brothers and sisters who come along during the visit.
